Creating Your Own eBooks: Thinking Realistic

How close are you to selling your 1000th copy of your own ebook and cashing out your first wave of profits? If you believe too much of what internet marketers tell you, chances are your expectations are too optimistic.

Creating and selling information products successfully takes a good mix of originality, expertise, ingenuity, and mainly hours of hard work. With any project you need to have clear and realistic expectations before you get started, so read on to help prepare yourself for the work ahead...

Unhelpful Cliché 1: "You can create and start selling ebooks in just three days"

When online marketers try to sell you information about how to create your own ebooks, they'll try to convince you it's so easy, you can do it in your sleep. If you start believing this, it will hurt your progress in the long term, because you'll have unrealistic expectations about how much work you have to put in to your own projects and how quickly you can expect to see results.

Unhelpful Cliché 2: "Use this magic tool to automatically create and crank out ebooks like crazy."

A common sales pitch for ebook-creation-related software and 'systems'. In reality you should be focusing on quality, and methodical marketing efforts concentrated on building single products up, one by one. Trying to start lots of projects at once, or trying to pump out dozens of junk products, will not lead you to success.

Unhelpful Cliché 3: "Learn how to market online and you can sell any ebook like crazy."

Of course it's true you need to know how to market your product effectively so you sell it. But marketing alone is not going to work: you also need a good product, effectively delivered, and a complete selling system set up around that product.

Unhelpful Cliché 4: "Consider a CPM approach as well as PPC and track your metrics for CTR and CPC - and don't ignore CPA JVs."

What? Online marketing is already a fully developed and intenstively in-depth area of knowledge and research. People like to throw around jargon to show off. Don't be put off - all of the basics you need to know to sell online, you can learn and apply without the need to become a geek, nerd, or boffin.

Unhelpful Cliché 5: "Quit your day job and earn a seven figure income while you sip cocktails on the beach."

Yes, some people undoubtedly have done that, but your goals need to be (a) realistic, and (b) your own. Your short and long term targets need to be set by you, according to the time and money you have to spend, and matched to what you can realistically achieve. You also need to make sure your 'dreams' are your own, and firmly based in reality. Having the right motivation is essential in preventing false starts in your ebook selling business.

You've probably noticed the word "realistic" used too many times in this article. Internet marketers use a lot of hype and exaggerated promises to motivate people to buy their products, but you need to keep focused and stay in the real world. You can and will succeed, with the right mindset!

How To Take Action:

Forget what everyone is telling you about selling infoproducts, especially your family and friends. Ignore all the sales letters and magic software tools being marketed to you. You can come back to all of those ideas later and take them on consideration. But for now you need some clarity to sort out your own ideas...
